our favorite things for eating away from home

June 30, 2023

y’all know our eating out budget is tiny.

but also? with prices these days, eating out is so dang expensive, my WORD.

(not only because of inflation, but because Brett is a bottomless pit.)

so, whenever we head on an adventure or head to the pool or head almost anywhere, I pack food.

and while my beloved glass containers are what I prefer for leftovers, stainless steel and plastic are what I prefer for taking food with us.

here’s a round up of my favorite goodies to do so.

plastic:

  • this 10-piece storage set with dressing/condiment containers

  • this 3-compartment bento box

  • this 5-compartment bento box

  • this 4-compartment snack box

  • this salad container with dressing container

  • this salad and sandwich container

  • this sandwich box

  • this set of deli containers that I use all the time for freezing food and prepping salads

    • also perfect for transporting food or gifting food!

  • and a few other Sistema pieces from TJMaxx - I love grabbing them there!

stainless steel:

  • insulated food jar, small

  • insulated food jar, large

  • every single one of these stainless steel snack containers - I love these!

    • the Easter Bunny in the past has always brought one of these and a Stasher bag for Summer pool-side snacks, so we have quite the well-used collection at this point

  • small stainless steel snack bento box

  • 3-compartment stainless steel bento box

  • 5-compartment stainless steel bento box

  • my go-to stainless steel water bottle

bags + coolers:

  • a handful of Stasher bags in various sizes

    • the Easter Bunny in the past has always brought one of these and one of these stainless steel snack containers for Summer pool-side snacks, so we have quite the well-used collection at this point

  • my beloved rolling cooler that I love with all my heart for Adventure Days

    • see our full list of favorite adventure gear here!

  • and then Santa brings us some University of Texas gear (our alma mater and where we met), so we have several UT-themed coolers for this nostalgic, happy reason

other:

  • for potlucks, I love this divided container with a handle, because I love bringing produce to potlucks. the divided sections do not go all the way to the lid, so if the container isn’t carried flat, a few pieces of the produce may get jumbled. but I love this thing - especially for summer melon season - the carrying handle is amazing and the container itself fits an impressive amount of food. (I also love this thing for carefully carrying a Snack Plate to our Wednesday Play Date.)

  • I also love this three-pack of acrylic trays for many reasons - Snack Dinners, play dough, activities with lots of pieces - but I especially love them for potlucks and for hosting. see my Easter-themed fruit tray featuring these trays here!

  • I love these divided containers for toppings - see them here for when I used them for an epic hot dog bar by the river! these divided containers are smaller, but the dividers go all the way to the lid - so they’re more leak-proof than the larger, handled divided containers I mentioned above - and therefore great for carrying toppings, snacks, etc.

  • speaking of eating by the river - we love these fly-deterring fans for keeping flies away from our food.

  • and I can’t forget my favorite kitchen towels. I have the white set with the blue stripe and they’re just so dang classic and pretty. it’s no secret I have a bunch of kitchen linens (rags, dishcloths, linen napkins, and these kitchen towels), and these might be my favorite for cooking, eating, and wiping hands.

Every Friday on Instagram I post a round-up of my packed lunches from that week, if you want to see these containers in action and if you want some food inspiration! See the posts here.
