my 10 favorite things: summer clothing

March 4, 2023

texas summers are not for the weak. and texas can have summer-like temps a good 80% of the year, so trust your Sister Haley when she says she has a fewwww favorite things to endure/enjoy summer.

ready?

  1. a simplified wardrobe

    • this quick instagram post explain more, but I only buy clothes in certain colors. not only does this make shopping easy, it makes getting dressed so simple and so joyful. even when it’s triple digits outside.

    • all that to say, I built my summer wardrobe on these colors. and when it’s an armpit outside, it’s nice having a streamlined summer wardrobe that I love.

    • so you’ll notice everything below is in those colors. the end.

  2. a great tankini top

    • Between my swimming background and my toddler, I am active in the pool. So I am most comfortable in an athletic, high-neck tankini. This one is my all-time favorite, but I also love love love this one, too.

    • I also love the long-torso one pieces from Andie. SO SO GOOD.

    • And I have this navy water-friendly ring sling to have the option of wearing Joey.

  3. fun swimsuit bottoms

    • I buy my tankini tops in solid navy. And then I buy different swimsuit bottoms in various colors and prints and styles that I love. And I have one pieces in navy. This formula makes me so happy, and it means I can mix and match all season long, year after year.

  4. gooood one-pieces

    1. Lately I love the long-torso one pieces from Andie. SO SO GOOD. I have three suits from them in navy!

  5. this cover-up

    • One navy, one white. Technically it’s a rashguard, but I love wearing it as a cover-up. It is incredibly chic and flattering.

    • I’m 5’10” and normally a true size Large, but in this cover-up I got an XL Long, and I love that it’s longer and looser.

    • I also love these sun shirts.

  6. these rashguards

    • One navy, one white. Like I said, I only buy certain colors.

    • And Lands End knows what they’re doing with their swim stuff. I can wear this long sleeve UPF shirt on a walk and feel fine.

    • I’m 5’10” and normally a true size Large, but in these rash guards I got an XL Long, and I love the looser fit.

    • I also love these sun shirts.

  7. a million pairs of these sunglasses and these sunglasses

    • I am not in a season where I can handle expensive sunglasses. Instead, I have a million pairs of these sunglasses and these sunglasses, and I keep them everywhere. My car, Brett’s car, stroller, diaper bag, Packed Pool Bag, gym bag, etc. Everywhere.

  8. a million hats, too

    • namely half a dozen caps from my alma mater.

    • and the biggest straw hat ever.

  9. some supportive sandals

    • I will never stray from my Birkenstocks. these are my everyday sandal, and these are my pool sandal. rinse and repeat.

    • this year we also got water-friendly hiking shoes for our adventure-filled summer - YAY! this navy pair and this black pair! perfect for pools and splash pads and watering holes alike.

  10. good, go-to shorts

    • these athletic shorts are what I wear all summer long. heck, I’m probably in these shorts 90% of the time from March through October. I’m thinking on getting a pair of white and a pair of navy to coordinate with my swimsuits, since right now I have about four pairs of black.

  11. bonus! an Outdoor Adventure Bag + Packed Pool Bag

    • I love our Outdoor Adventure Bag + Packed Pool Bag. I hang them on our hallway hooks, and I keep them there all summer long.

    • And on the hooks near the bag I have anything water thing that needs to dry: towels, cover-ups, swimsuits, reusable diapers, etc.

    • So when it’s time to go somewhere, all I have to do is grab the bag(s), round up any of the now-dry things, and throw in some fresh snacks. BLISS.

honorable mentions:

  • retractable sun shade

    • having this stay attached to my car window is THE BEST THING EVER, especially in Texas

  • a daily (and weekly!) summer schedule

    • a must-have, in my opinion.

  • 10 Things I Do for a Great Summer

    • 10 non-negotiables for me once the weather starts warming up

  • favorite outdoor toys, favorite adventure gear

  • this navy water-friendly ring sling

    • to have the option of wearing Joey. but we love this infant float, too.

    • this post has my other pool favorites.

  • a Local Places list

    • aka a running list of allllll the places you want to go nearby. including alllll the watering holes, hotel pools, sno cone stands, indoor play places, and splash pads you want to visit when it’s a million degrees out. you’re welcome.

  • this sunscreen

    • I get a jug of it in my Easter Basket every year, I keep it on my bathroom counter, and it lasts me all year long. I love the lotion-like consistency. I wear it everyday as my face sunscreen, but will also slather up my whole body when heading to the pool. I also love the tinted version.

    • see my full skincare routine here.

  • this hair oil

    • I swim laps two to five times a week, and during the warm-weather months I try to take KK to the pool as often as possible. all that to say, I’m in a pool often, and my hair loves this nourishing oil as some TLC.

  • routine pedicures

    • I try to prioritize a pedicure every other month, and I only do this color because it’s my absolute favorite and because it makes me feel good.

    • And in between, I keep this guy in my shower. The true MVP.

  • and sugaring every six weeks

    • mama needs to feel good in a swimsuit, okay.

There you have it. My summer essentials.
