our daily outdoor time + our favorite outdoor toys

May 4, 2023

After nap every day, we go outside. (We usually go outside sometime in the morning, but that outdoor time before dinner is a must.) KK needs that time to play outdoors - her mood is better, bedtime is easier, and our day is all around more enjoyable. It’s one of my favorite times of day!

It’s also beautifully flexible. Outdoor Time can be our driveway, our backyard, my parents’ backyard, a friend’s backyard, a neighborhood walk, a nearby playground, a beloved splash pad, a trip to the pool, whatever!

Here are some of our favorite things for our daily Outdoor Time.

  • the best toddler scooter

  • balance bike

  • helmet

  • big box of chalk from Target

  • kites we also bring to the beach

  • kk’s favorite bubbles

  • bubble machine

  • giant bubble wand set

  • cones

  • football

  • this velcro toss and catch game we also take to the beach

  • this ring toss game we also take to the beach

  • miniature foldable soccer net + ball

  • the kitchen we use as an outdoor mud kitchen

  • this slightly larger slide

  • mini trampoline

  • small wagon for hauling rocks, etc

  • dump truck

  • glow-in-the-dark football

  • throwing foam planes

  • flying disc helicopter toys

PS We love our garage cart for organizing the majority of our outdoor toys.

Curious what we take on adventures? See our list of favorite outdoor gear here! We often use quite a bit of this list - like our beloved chairs! and our s’mores kit! - all the time for Daily Outdoor Time.

But if the weather is especially warm, our Outdoor Time becomes some sort of water play:

  • a trip to a big pool

    • here’s what we bring to the pool

  • our foldable pool we put in the driveway

  • a sprinkler activity

  • a trip to a park splash pad

  • our little splash pad we stick in the driveway

  • our water table

  • this water wall

  • pom pom water table using this other outdoor table we love

  • bubble foam water table using this other outdoor table we love

  • easy water/ice activities from Busy Toddler

If we go to the Pool, here’s what we bring. Curious what I wear? Here’s my post on my favorite swimsuits + summer essentials!

But if the weather is terrible, we’ll instead do:

  • a fun bath activity (unless the weather is super terrible)

  • something from Our Monthly Activities, like this month’s sensory bin or play dough tray

  • a show

After Outdoor Time, we come inside and do Evening Family Quiet Time with a list of preselected activities. The best! See a peek into our daily rhythm here. Our days follow a predicable flow and it works really well for us.

Here’s 20 things we keep on hand for when we don’t feel well (or when we’re hurt) - our first aid stash, our stuff for burns/bites/stings, etc!
