anyone who knows me knows I love my sleep. when I haven’t gotten enough rest, I unapologetically cut my to do list down to the bare minimum, just to ensure that I have plenty of time to prioritize more sleep. both my morning routines and my evening routines are basically centered around making sure Haley has enough rest.
so all that to say, I’m a huge fan of our bedding. and while maybe one day we’ll splurge on some niiiiice bedding, in this season of young kids (read: messy), lots of dogs (read: messy), and no time for high maintenance laundering (or worrying), the bedding we have now is just wonderful - both affordable and comfortable.
so here’s a breakdown of our current bedding, as well as some simple systems we use to take care of what we have. because for me, systems are the key for both rest and contentment. the best.
our bedding:
these less than $20 sheets - I love them
this mattress pad for the whole bed
this thinnnn quilt, because Brett is a hot sleeper
this basic bedskirt - I love that it’s elastic
a colorful Target quilt bunched at the end of the bed for a pop of color
some decorative pillows from Etsy
I got this for my pregnancies - I put it on my side of the bed in case my water broke in the middle of the night. but then, this heavy duty mattress pad was a life saver during postpartum - all the night sweats and boob leaks and baby spit up and other magical postpartum fluids. I can’t recommend this thing enough.

now we put it on Brett’s side of the bed just because this Texas summer he’s been such a sweaty sleeper. and I’ve heard this heavy duty mattress pad is also great for night-time potty training. or for sitting around without a diaper, airing out diaper rashes.
all that to say, this heavy duty mattress pad is worth its weight in gold. we have two, but you’ll learn more about why in a second.
we call these pillows one of the best investments we ever made for our house. I’m serious. they are pricey, but gosh have they been worth it. listen to your dear friend Haley when I say they are the most comfortable, supportive pillows in all the land.
one of my monthly routines is to wash our pillows - but more on this in a second. I throw them in the washer, I dry them in the dryer, and they come out like new. we can’t recommend these pillows enough.
Fresh Sheets Friday + our spare sheet system:
every Friday, I wash all the sheets in the house. starting the weekend with Fresh Sheets is one of my favorite gifts to myself. see the quick reel here.
all our sheets are white, all our pillow cases are white, all our sleepsacks are white. this makes our Friday load of sheets so dang easy. if I have any white clothes from the week that need to be washed, I throw them in, too.
I add detergent, but I also add a quarter-ish cup of this magical stuff to keep our whites white. our washer has a “soak” setting, and I’ll do that, too.
now here’s what’s worth noting: I’ve learned over the years that if I wait until the end of the day to put the clean sheets back on the bed, I just won’t do it. I’m tired. So we keep a second set of all our sheets, our sleep sacks, etc. And on Friday morning, when I’m doing morning routines, I add a quarter-ish cup of this stuff in the washer to keep everything white, add detergent, throw all the dirty sheets, and do a long cycle with a good soak. and while I still have momentum I immediately go and put the spare sets of sheets on all the beds. so then later in the day when the sheets in the washer are done and clean, I put them away as the spare set. and I repeat this every week.*
*jk, not every week. sometimes, I’m just not feeling it. and that’s okay. whenever I’m not feeling a routine - for whatever reason - I skip it, guilt free. because I know I can jump back in the following time (in this case, next Friday), and that our house will do just fine with a week of no fresh sheets. as I mentioned earlier, my rest is more important. :)
similarly, on Tuesdays, I wash towels. here’s a reel on Towel Tuesday.
and all other days of the week, I do this simple laundry routine.

our linen closet:
we keep everyone’s spare sheets in their room. joey’s spare sheets are in his closet, KK’s spare sheets are in her closet, our spare sheets are in our closet. which means our linen closet is able to be used for other things.
see a tour of our linen closet in the “hallway closet” highlight of my Instagram. it stores our medicine, our first aid, our simplified gift wrap system, our Decide Once gifts, our toddler haircutting supplies, etc. it’s some of the hardest working square footage in our home.
monthly routines:
I keep a list on Google Keep of alllllll the things I’d love to do once a month. See that list here (and see the comments - I lovedddd reading y’alls monthly routines!).
once a month, I love to wash our pillows.
once a month, I love to wash our quilt.
once a month, I love to wash our comforter.
maybe that’s too much or too little, but for us it’s a perfect amount. and, again, if I don’t feel like washing something, I skip it, guilt free. I know I’ll get a reminder to wash it next month and our house will be fine in the meantime. :)
on a similar note, I give our washing machine a good deep clean once a month with this stuff.

annual routines:
and then twice a year, we deep clean the bedrooms. in theory. let me explain.
i keep a running list on Google Keep of everything I like to do during certain months of the year: family traditions, annual appointments, home maintenance tasks, holiday celebrations, etc. read more about that list (and see lots of examples) here.
something we swear by on that list is our deep cleaning schedule. every area in our home is assigned two months a year to get deep cleaned. And even though it doesn’t always happen, I love the twice-a-year reminder.
assigning household tasks and chores to certain days/months really lessens my mental load of running a household - it makes it all feel manageable. I know what's getting taken care of when.
It also gives me permission to rest. It allows me the gift of only dealing with tasks when it's their time. Like, unless it's January or July, I don't worry about deep cleaning the kitchen.
And, if I don't feel like doing that month's deep cleaning - for whatever reason - I skip it, guilt free, because I know I can get to it next time around in six months. Which is more than plenty.
Additionally, I can choose what deep cleaning means to me that month. Are we doing a really good scrub? Or just those two obvious things bothering me? Or some overall extra TLC? Or a quick decluttering? Or are we skipping altogether? Like I said, I just like having the twice-a-year check-in for each area of our home.
So twice a year, I check in on bedrooms. Does the carpet need a deep clean? Let’s check the mattress. Should we take the upholstery cleaner to the headboard? Could any of the risers be straightened? Let’s throw the bedskirt in the wash, vacuum under the bed frame, and purge under the bed while we’re at it. And so on.

Wishing you a week of whatever you need to recharge - like rest and Fresh Sheets. xo
