a question I get often is: what do you ask from grandparents for gifts?
i’m very lucky: both my parents and brett’s parents love receiving gift suggestions.
so I usually send over direct links, or a general wish list.
and when it comes to birthdays and holidays, I usually ask for the same five gifts from our parents, whether that be gifts for KK’s birthday or gifts for my own. gifts I know we’d really love and gifts I know that won’t add to the clutter of our home.
clothes
if we have a very particular gap in our simplified wardrobes, I may ask for it for a birthday gift.
like, for brett’s last birthday, I asked my parents to get him a specific olive green Patagonia jacket. or, this past Christmas I asked my parents to get KK three pairs of pajamas in the next size up.
books
I keep Amazon wishlists of things we’d love to receive - one for each person - and on everyone’s list there are several books (or audiobooks).
art/craft supplies for kids
I emphasize this a lot to our families - we always love receiving any sort of artsy or crafty consumable. craft kits, coloring pages, activity books, color-your-own postcards, stickers, markers, etc. all of it is so appreciated.
if there’s some supply or activity in particular I’d love for our monthly play themes, I may throw it onto KK’s Wishlist to share with loved ones.
here’s a reel on our Evening Quiet Time ritual - a time of day we love working on these kinds of activities.
here’s how I store and organize all our art/craft supplies (and games and playdough).
memberships, subscriptions, or experiences
one of my favorite things to ask for since it may be a pricey investment, but we benefit from all year long.
for example, for Christmas we asked my parents for a children’s museum family membership, for KK’s birthday we may ask her for an awesome toddler craft box subscription I’ve had my eye on. for Brett’s birthday, we’re going on a trip to Chicago, so I may ask my parents for some baseball tickets.
if I’m trying to think of memberships (or tickets) to ask for, I reference my Local Places list for ideas.
things I know we’d use weekly, if not daily
if there’s some item we’d love to have and would use for a long, long while, it may be apart of our Three Birthday Gift Tradition. or, we may ask our parents.
like, we asked my parents for a nice train set for KK for Christmas to keep at their house and for her birthday we asked for this scooter (both of which ended up being the best decisions ever). for my birthday I’m asking for a coffee maker or nice milk frother.
