how we organize kk's art supplies

January 25, 2023

remember how we turned the dining room into a play area for kk? and then turned our home office into a space for games, puzzles, and projects?

the best!

but first!

  • here’s a video tour of this space, if you’d prefer to see it than read about it.

  • here’s my amazon store where I link what I can

  • see my highlight on my Instagram for individual close-up photos of this space

and if you’d prefer to read about this space, here ya go!

kk’s art carts

we have two rolling carts like this - aka our “art carts” - and between the two of them, we have:

  • four of these magazine magazine racks for drawing pads, coloring books, printer paper, etc

  • these caddies + caddies from Target Dollar Spot

    • we have one caddy as her Water Wow Caddy

    • and then we keep some caddies empty sos that we have space to grow into

  • various bins like this and this for crayons, markers colored pencils, etc*

    • because our art carts stay in this room, these bins are our way to make art supplies easily mobile, especially for our Evening Family Quiet Time

    • we love these largeeee crayons, this huge pack of colored pencils, and these markers

  • we love using our art carts as apart of our Evening Quiet Family Time, as well as our seasonal art projects for our Monthly Play Themes

*note about our containers of art supplies:

  • KK is only to have ONE container out at a time, and one of us has to be nearby. so she can’t use, say, both the crayon container and marker container at the same time. she has to choose one.

  • kk is still young, so we work on the expectation of “we only draw on paper.” the minute kk tries to draw on, say, the tile, we take everything away and tell her we’ll try again later.

  • we usually keep the doors to this room open, but we shut them if need be.

kk’s play dough caddy

  • we have a separate caddy for kk’s play dough supplies. see more on that here!

  • or here’s my amazon board with some of our favorite tools.

  • when we use play dough:

    • we have monthly play themes and each month we have a new play dough activity. see the full list of our monthly activities here!

    • one of kk’s choices for our Evening Quiet Family Time is play dough.

our construction paper organizer

  • we have this wall-mounted file organizer, and we use it to separate our construction paper by color…and keep it from being one big mess.

  • i also stick those huge melissa and doug coloring books in this organizer, too!

our activity/sticker book baskets

  • you know all those lovely activity books - reusable sticker books, for example - that we love receiving as gifts? I keep them in a bunch of wall baskets like this.

  • we have monthly play themes and each month we usually have themed activity books, so we keep them in these baskets. see the full list of our monthly activities here!

  • one of kk’s choices for our Evening Quiet Family Time is stickers + activity books

our picture ledges

  • we also have a whole slew of those mosslanda picture ledges from ikea in this room, and currently we store our games on them. here’s a video tour of this space to get a better visual.

and a biggggg old pegboard

  • we have a biggggg old pegboard and while it’s not the most gorgeous thing, I love it for neatly storing alllllll our little odds and ends. i link our pegboard organizers here, but you can also peek at the pegboard and its hooks/bins in this reel.

  • we love these mesh bags for storing loose pieces like pom poms, foam letters, and pipe cleaners.

  • we also love this wire and hooks set for displaying artwork + preschool projects.

    • we also use this easy box system for keeping childhood treasures

Loved this post?

  • see my highlight on my Instagram for individual close-up photos of this space

  • we have monthly play themes, and apart of that is themed art activities, play dough trays, and more - so we use supplies all the time. see the full list of our monthly activities here!

  • our Evening Quiet Family Time is also when we work on art projects, play dough, and sticker/activity books. it’s the best!
