a million years ago, i was a teacher. and i bought a caddy from the Dollar Spot section of Target - similar to this caddy - to hold my supplies for my small group table.
then I became a wedding florist, and I used that caddy to corral my most-used supplies.
and now? that blessed caddy is used for kk’s play dough supplies.
she loves carrying it around, and I love that it keeps all those play dough tools contained, but in a way that’s still easy for a toddler to access without getting frustrated.
and i love the darling journey the caddy has been on through the years.
and I love including play dough in our daily rhythm - the teacher in me loves the endless benefits it provides.
let’s talk play dough!
our play dough rules:
at this point, we only allow access to one color at a time
and kk is only allowed to play with her play dough on one of these trays or her play room tables. the minute the play dough leaves the surface and travels elsewhere, we take everything away and say “the play dough stays on the tray/table. we’ll try again later!”
my favorite play dough:
yes, you can totally make your own play dough. i just don’t like to. we all have our strengths, and making play dough is something i neither enjoy, nor have the patience for. but I love play dough activities for my kids and I can’t stand the smell of that traditional play dough.
so I buy play dough from my favorite small shop. and often times I buy her awesome play dough sensory kits, too. (I tend to include play dough and/or kits in holiday/birthday gifts for KK.)
in our art/craft room, we have a caddy of play dough tools. (here’s a video tour of this space.)
and in our caddy we have:

when we use play dough:
we have monthly play themes and each month we have a new play dough activity. see the full list of our monthly activities here!
one of kk’s choices for our Evening Quiet Family Time is play dough.
we also have two times of day for independent play, and kk’s welcome to use play dough during this time, too.
we have monthly play themes
and I love to rotate set out a themed play dough activity for the month:
see more about our monthly play themes here - each month in the post has our seasonally themed play dough trays, books, sensory bins, art activities, etc we loved that month. aka tons of easy, engaging ideas!
